G: I wrote and wrote and then I tried to ok everything but it all got erased. So now I don't even want to write what I wrote the first time. How could I remember?

Isn't it amazing how small the world is? And how we are all the same? This isn't what I wrote the first time. The first time I wrote about how your descriptions reminded me of the orphanage in Viet Nam or the streets in Nicaragua during the war years.

We get so used to hearing about extreme poverty, hunger, misery in the world, that when we finally come on it face to face, we are shocked to see individuals like ourselves. People who could be our mothers or our sons or our friends.
And the inability to do anything to help goes against everything human in us.

It's like seeing that giraffe. You recognized it immediately from your children's books. And what a great surprise that it looked just like its picture! Your wanting to bathe those children..because that's what you would do with your own child.

The secret I think is to remember that each small gesture, each hand held, each little wrapped pill is a testament to some kind of love, a seed that will grow and grow; and you don't know the outcome and maybe never will.

But it's something. It's how the world changes.

love from california...from the whole family.

I'm so glad you are having such a meaningful experience. Through your short stay, you have helped people live healthier lives. Reading your blog makes me want to hop on the next plane to Africa. Love, Annie

JoAnn, I am so happy to hear from you. I love your response & I have to tell you that what is amazing is that when I was in the pediatric ward I thought of the orphanage in Vietnam. It is so amazing that you thought of it from my words. Much love to you & everyone there. I miss you all. Part of my energy & committment to being here matured so much while I was with you in Cali- our talks over dinner, you know...
Love,
Gina
